Tai Woffinden makes history as he becomes the first ever British rider to be a 3x World Champion.

Going into the night, Woffinden had to score 12 points to secure the World title, assuming that his rival, Bartosz Zmarzlik, won all of his races. The battling duo scored two wins each in their first two rides and sat at the pinnacle of Torun’s table joint with Artem Laguta.

Everything was running smoothly until the race everybody waited for lined up at the tapes; Jason Doyle, Martin Vaculik, Zmarzlik and Woffinden. Zmarzlik continued his stunning form, while “Woffy” struggled to get away from the gate in time. The Brit swapped for second and third with Aussie, Doyle, before every #108 fans nightmare struck. Woffinden suffered a heavy crash after locking up behind Doyle and barrel rolling into the air fence, rather aggressively. After Tai’s exclusion, Zmarzlik ensured his deficit would decrease from 10 points to 7, making the title seem even more possible for the Pole.

The 28 year-old’s bike assumingly wasn’t in the best condition, so it was damage limitation in his next programmed ride. However, Zmarzlik continued his winning ways, determined to make Woffinden’s job no easier.

Tai returned to winning ways and Zmarzlik dropped a point to maximum man, Laguta, meaning the brilliant Brit only had to score 1 point to secure the title.

Once again, the two rivals met in the semi-final to declare the 2018 FIM Speedway World Champion. Woffinden chose gate three, as the Pole picked gate two. The pair shot from the tapes fairly equally, as Niels K Iversen ran away at the front. Hancock also got involved with Zmarzlik, allowing “Woffy” to squeeze into second and take his third World title.

Tai continued to finish the series in style as he took the meeting's winner trophy home too, finishing ahead of Russian rockets, Artem Laguta and Emil Sayfutdinov.

Freddie Lindgren stole Bronze in the series to secure his first ever World Championship medal. Maciej Janowski, Greg Hancock, Jason Doyle, Artem Laguta and Emil Sayfutdinov also join the top three to sail into the 2019 series.
